Last week I noticed my dog had a cataract forming. He has recently been diagnosed as diabetic and I knew to look out for it. This was stressful enough which sent my word count down for my NaNoWriMo, I couldn’t concentrate but when he began frantically sniffing around the house in a panic on Friday night and bumping into the chair, we realised he had gone blind in that eye.
I was devastated and felt sick. My poor little Chinook was frightened and all I could do was hold him.
Needless to say I didn’t manage much writing that day.
I was sitting on the floor with him when we had people come over to view our house. I told my boyfriend that if they don’t like dogs it’s tough as my boy is not being put in the garden. Luckily they loved dogs and Chinook got up to greet them.
After a sleepless night, I got up to take the dogs out at 7am. I wasn’t sure what to expect but after a few minutes on the walk, Chinook was trotting along and pulling my arm off as usual. I can’t tell you what a relief it was. He was the one who had to deal with his loss of sight yet he was making me feel better.
His instinct to hunt the cat up the end of our road and sniff poo far outweighed the fact that he was now disabled.
Us writers also have an instinct….to write. It’s what we do, it’s who we are. So I’ve decided that like the O2 advert says; I’m going to BE MORE DOG. There is poo to be sniffed and stories to be told. I’ve since found the time and focus to write everywhere and anywhere. – even taping notes during our walk in the woods.
So all you NaNo’s out there, if you are stressed, the kids are being demanding or your boss doesn’t understand what you’re trying to do, take the lead from these amazing animals and ..BE MORE DOG!

Chinook is booked in to have a consultation with experts who hope they can make him see again. We told him he’s going to have a bionic eye.
